Snowmen at Night Activities and Ideas

Do you love the story, Snowmen at Night by Caralyn Buehner? This is one of my favorite winter read alouds. I can’t wait to share 10 Snowmen at Night activities that I use in my classroom that go along with this adorable snowman story!

I use these Snowmen at Night activities as stations. My class and I have so much fun having a Snowmen at Night Station Day. We read the book, eat a snack, drink hot chocolate, and have a ton of fun with these stations and activities! The stations are engaging, fun, and full of literacy skills, math skills, and STEM skills! I love using these Snowmen at Night activities before a break or holiday.

Snowmen at Night Sticker Story

Students love using stickers to write their own Snowmen at Night story.

Students love using stickers to write their own Snowmen at Night story.

Kids love using stickers! However, this time they will be coloring, cutting, and gluing ‘stickers’ to create their sticker story. I love watching my students select their ‘stickers’ to add to their winter scene. Once the stickers have been added to the winter scene, students write a story to go along with the snowmen at night picture they created.

Ice Pond Spelling

Students spell their sight or spelling words on the ice pond!

Ice Pond Spelling is one of my favorite Snowmen at Night activities! This is a fun and hands on spelling or sight word activity. Simply pour salt (or anything to represent fake snow) onto a cookie sheet. The cookie sheet is the snowmen’s ice pond! The students will use their finger to spell their spelling words or sight words in the snow! So fun!

Snowmen at Night Activity #3

Snowball Pile

Snowmen love having snowball fights at night! With this Snowmen at Night activity, students will grab a snowball, read the sight word, and record the word on their snowball pile paper. Students will continue until all the snowballs have been used. I like to put the snowballs in a pile or bucket, but you could also have your students have a real snowball fight by tossing the snowballs to a partner.

Snowmen at Night Activity #4

Snowball Fort STEM Challenge

The snowmen might need a fort to hideout during their snowball fight! This Snowmen at Night activity will have students building a snowball fort using marshmallows, toothpicks, pipe cleaners, etc. I love watching my little engineers have so much fun planning and constructing their snowball fort. Simply provide students with the materials and let their minds start imagining the world’s best snowball fort!

Snowmen at Night Activity #5

Shopping with a Snowman

Brr! Snowmen need to be dressed for the cold winter nights! With this Snowmen at Night activity, students will buy items for their snowman by correctly placing the right amount of coins with the item they would like to purchase. Then students will then dress their snowman with the items! This is a wonderful game to review counting a collection of coins! My students really enjoyed dressing their snowman!

Snowmen at Night Activity #6

Snowman Guess Who

My students had so much fun with this snowmen at night activity! They started off reading 4 clues about what a snowman does at night or for work. Then they matched the snowman with the clues and recorded the snowman name on their paper. This is a great activity for making inferences or making predictions!

Snowmen at Night Activity #7

Snowman Science- How to Create Fake Snow

Students love this activity SNOW much! It doesn’t matter if you live in snowy Michigan or sunny Florida, kids love making fake snow. This fake snow recipe is super easy! You will only need 2 special ingredients. You will mix together 2 cups of baking soda and 1/2 cup of hair conditioner in a large mixing bowl or container. This will make enough for a small group of students, however if you want to making enough for your whole class, you may need to double or triple the recipe. My students go through the scientific process while creating the fake snow. They ask a question, form a hypothesis, write their materials and procedure, record their results and conclusion.

Snowmen at Night Writing - Students will use a word bank with pictures to write what they believe snowmen do at night.
